Haisham signs two-year deal, eyes IOIG 2027 Badminton Gold

Promising Maldivian shuttler Haisham Ibrahim Ali has committed to a two-year contract with his club, taking on the role of a full-time player as he sets his sights on a historic men’s singles gold at the 2027 Indian Ocean Island Games (IOIG).

The Vaavu Keyodhoo-born athlete has been closely tied to the club’s talent development pathway, becoming the first recipient of its development scholarship.

His rise reflects both the club’s vision to invest in local talent and his own determination to succeed on bigger stages.

Haisham’s career took a brief pause, but his return last month was nothing short of remarkable.

Seizing the opportunity at the National Team selection trials, he dominated his group stage matches despite limited preparation, earning a deserved place in the Maldives Men’s National Badminton Squad.

Earlier this month, he also impressed at the Dhiraagu Maldives Junior Open, advancing to the men’s singles semifinals.

His record already includes a clean sweep at the 13th Atoll League Badminton Tournament in 2022, where he clinched three gold medals, in men’s singles, mixed doubles, and the team event.

With a renewed focus, national squad selection, and the backing of his club, Haisham is now aiming for the pinnacle of his career: standing on top of the podium at the IOIG 2027
