Minister Rafiu applauds Revival Sports’ efforts
Revival Sports Club received strong praise from the Maldivian sports leadership after returning from a highly successful Southern Africa tour, where athletes competed in three BWF-sanctioned international tournaments in Zambia, Botswana, and South Africa.
The team represented the Maldives at a crucial time, following a special exemption granted by the Badminton World Federation (BWF) that allowed Maldivian athletes to continue competing internationally while the Badminton Association of the Maldives (BAM) was under suspension.
Despite the challenges surrounding the sport, Revival Sports delivered an exceptional performance, securing seven medals across the three tournaments, one gold, three silver, and three bronze.
At the Zambia International, Zayan Zaki and Fathimath Nabaha (Naba) captured Gold in Mixed Doubles, while Naba and Aminath Nabeeha (Naby) claimed Silver in Women’s Doubles.
In the Botswana International, Zayan and Naba earned Bronze in Mixed Doubles, and Naba and Naby added another Silver in Women’s Doubles.

The tour concluded with the South Africa International, where Zayan and Naba secured Bronze in Mixed Doubles, Naba won Bronze in Women’s Singles, and Naba alongside Naby claimed Silver in Women’s Doubles.
Upon their arrival at Velana International Airport, the athletes were welcomed at a reception held in the VIP area, attended by Minister of Sports, Fitness and Recreation Abdulla Rafiu, Maldives Olympic Committee Secretary General Thamooh Ahmed Saeed, newly elected BAM President Ishfan Mohamed, and senior officials from the Sports Ministry and the Badminton Association.
Minister Rafiu praised Revival Sports for their determination and commitment during a period of difficulty for the sport, noting that their success reflects the dedication of athletes and the club’s effort to keep the sport progressing. He expressed his appreciation for Revival’s continued work and highlighted the importance of such achievements in shaping a stronger future for badminton in the Maldives.
The Minister also outlined several government initiatives aimed at supporting athletes, including the introduction of an athlete insurance scheme next year, amendments to the Arutha scholarship, enhancements to the national athletes’ monthly allowance, and updated prize-money structures, all intended to strengthen the sports ecosystem and better support Maldivian competitors.
BAM President Ishfan Mohamed also acknowledged Revival Sports’ contribution during the suspension period and highlighted the ongoing dedication of badminton teams and clubs across the atolls, who continue to play a vital role in sustaining and developing the sport nationwide.
Revival Sports’ medal-winning campaign stands as a significant milestone for Maldivian badminton and arrives at a time when the sport is preparing for a fresh chapter under newly reinstated national leadership.
