Revival Sports Reviving Maldivian Badminton on Southern Africa Tour
Revival Sports Club’s High Performance players are set to embark on a landmark international tour, continuing their impressive rise in world badminton.
Revival Sports is taking part in these tournaments despite the Maldives currently being under a BWF suspension, following a temporary exemption recently granted by the Badminton World Federation.
The team departs the Maldives today to compete in three consecutive BWF-sanctioned tournaments across Zambia, Botswana, and South Africa, further strengthening the club’s position as a driving force in the revival of Maldivian badminton.
The tour will begin with the Zambia International 2025 in Lusaka from 13th to 16th November, followed by the Botswana International 2025 in Otse from 20th to 23rd November, before concluding with the Aquasprings South Africa International 2025 in Cape Town from 27th to 30th November.
Representing the Maldives at these events are six of Revival Sports’ top players: Nibal Ahmed, Zayan Zaki, Hassan Zayan Mohamed, Haisham Ibrahim Ali, Fathimath Nabaha (Naba), and Aminath Nabeeha (Naby).
Competing across multiple categories, these athletes will feature in men’s and women’s singles, doubles, and mixed doubles events throughout the tour. In Zambia and Botswana, Nibal, Zayan, Hassan, and Haisham will compete in men’s singles and doubles, while Naba and Naby will take part in women’s singles, doubles, and mixed doubles events.
In South Africa, Nibal, Zayan, and Hassan will represent in men’s events, while Naba and Naby will contest in women’s and mixed doubles categories.
This tour follows Revival Sports’ historic achievements in 2024, where the club achieved remarkable international success.
At the Botswana International 2024, Revival Sports made history for the Maldives by winning five medals, one gold, two silver, and two bronze, marking one of the nation’s most successful performances in a BWF-sanctioned event.
In a defining moment for Maldivian badminton, Naba defeated her twin sister Naby in an all-Maldivian women’s singles final to claim the Maldives’ first-ever singles gold medal in a BWF tournament. Nabeeha’s silver medal also marked the first singles silver for the Maldives at this level. Naba and Naby went on to secure a bronze medal in women’s doubles, adding to their growing tally of international medals, now standing at 12 medals together in women’s doubles.
In the mixed doubles category, Naba paired with Zayan to win silver, narrowly missing out on gold against Azerbaijan’s Agil Gabilov and Era Maftuha, with a final score of 23–21, 21–18. This became their fifth BWF-sanctioned medal as a pair, which includes one gold, one silver, and three bronze medals.
Additionally, Zayan and Nibal claimed their first-ever BWF bronze medal as a pair in the men’s doubles event, capping off a stellar performance for the Revival team.
Earlier that year, Revival Sports celebrated another breakthrough at the Zambia International 2024, where the club secured one gold and two bronze medals for the Maldives. Naba and Naby triumphed in women’s doubles, defeating Sri Lanka’s Hasini Ambalangodage and Hasara Wijayarathne in straight sets 21–16, 21–19, earning the Maldives’ first BWF gold medal since 2019. Naba also collected two bronze medals, one in women’s singles and another in mixed doubles with Zayan.
The Maldives’ first-ever BWF gold medals date back to 2019, when Zayan, Naba, and Naby achieved gold in women’s doubles and mixed doubles at the Pakistan International, marking the beginning of a new era in Maldivian badminton.
As Revival Sports prepares for another demanding tour in Zambia, Botswana, and South Africa, the team carries the nation’s hopes and pride onto the global stage. Their journey reflects not only competitive excellence but also the revival of Maldivian badminton, built on dedication, perseverance, and a shared vision of international success.
