Revival Sports Shift Focus to Mixed and Women’s Doubles at Azerbaijan International
Revival Sports will now turn their attention to the Mixed Doubles and Women’s Doubles events at the Azerbaijan International Challenge 2026, as the Maldives’ premier badminton club continues its historic debut at Challenge-level competition on the European circuit.
In the Mixed Doubles Round of 32, the Revival Sports pairing of Zayan Zaki and Fathimath Nabaha (Naba) is set to face the German duo Jonathan Dresp and Selin Hübsch. The German pair is currently 163 in World Rankings.
Meanwhile, in the Women’s Doubles Round of 32, Naba and Aminath Nabeeha (Naby) will take on Qualifier 1, following the completion of the preliminary rounds.
The Azerbaijan International Challenge marks Revival Sports’ first appearance in a Challenge-level tournament and its maiden outing on the European badminton circuit, with the club fielding athletes across all five disciplines. Nibal Ahmed and Zayan Zaki represented the club in Men’s Singles, while Aminath Nabeeha (Naba) and Fathimath Nabaha (Naby) competed in the Women’s Singles events. Zayan and Nibal partnered in Men’s Doubles, with Naba and Naby forming the Women’s Doubles pair. Mixed Doubles entries included Zayan and Naba, along with Nibal and Naby.
Earlier in the tournament, Zayan recorded a notable victory in the Men’s Singles qualifying Round of 64, defeating Fajar Karimli of Azerbaijan 21–10, 21–14. However, his run in singles came to an end in the qualifying Round of 32, where he was defeated by England’s Nadeem Dalvi 21–5, 21–10.
In the Women’s Singles qualifying Round of 32, Naba faced a tough challenge against Japan’s Shiori Ebihara, ranked 162 in the BWF World Rankings, with the Japanese player claiming a 21–5, 21–4 victory. Naby exited the Women’s Singles competition in the qualifying Round of 64 following a 21–12, 21–6 loss to UAE’s Nourani Azzahra.
Nibal Ahmed was also eliminated in the Men’s Singles qualifying Round of 64, losing 21–10, 21–11 to Jamal Rahmat Pandi of the Philippines. In Men’s Doubles, Zayan and Nibal were beaten by the Czech Republic pairing of Vojtěch Havlíček and Tomáš Švejda, who secured a 21–6, 21–14 win.
In the Mixed Doubles qualifying rounds, Nibal and Naby faced strong opposition from Switzerland’s Nicolas Franconvile and Julie Franconvile, ranked 135 in the world, with the Swiss pair winning 21–10, 21–14.
With singles and men’s doubles campaigns concluded, Revival Sports now looks to make an impact in the Mixed Doubles and Women’s Doubles Round of 32, as the club continues to gain valuable experience against elite international opposition at the Azerbaijan International Challenge 2026.
