
Special Olympics Maldives celebrate success at SOAP Badminton Competition
The Special Olympics Maldives team concluded a remarkable journey at the SOAP Badminton Competition 2025 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, held from September 16–21.
Revival Sports contribution was vital in the success of it.
The tournament gathered athletes from across Asia to compete in both traditional and unified formats, offering a stage not only for competition but also for inclusivity, growth, and shared joy.
Representing the Maldives were nine athletes across two age categories. In the 16–21 unified format, Mohamed Raaif Shareef, Amnaa Ahmed Abdulla, and Aminath Raisha Ali competed alongside unified partners Mohamed Aloof Rifau and Mariyam Enas Ilyas. In the 22–33 traditional format, the team featured Ibrahim Rabeeth, Mohamed Jumaan Ahmed, and Aishath Maniya Adam. The delegation was led by Head of Delegation Moosa Zameer, with coaching responsibilities carried out by Revival Sports Badminton Academy’s Rishwan Shiyam and coach Aminath Shahurunaaz Moosa.
The team’s efforts produced historic results for the Maldives. In the unified category, Mariyam Enas Ilyas and Aminath Raisha Ali won a silver medal in the Women’s Doubles (16–21), while in the traditional category, Ibrahim Rabeeth claimed a silver medal in the Men’s Singles (22–33). These podium finishes stood out as proud moments for the entire squad.
Several athletes also delivered strong performances, narrowly missing medals but showcasing resilience and skill. Mohamed Raaif Shareef placed fourth in the Men’s Singles (16–21), while Amnaa Ahmed Abdulla finished fourth in the Women’s Singles (16–21). In the 22–33 category, Aishath Maniya Adam also secured a fourth-place finish in women’s singles. In doubles action, Ibrahim Rabeeth and Mohamed Jumaan Ahmed placed fourth in the Men’s Doubles (22–33), while Mohamed Aloof Rifau and Mohamed Raaif Shareef finished fourth in the Unified Men’s Doubles (16–21). Aminath Raisha Ali and Amnaa Ahmed Abdulla placed fifth in the Unified Women’s Doubles (16–21).
These achievements marked a significant milestone, as for most of the athletes this was their first international competition. They displayed remarkable potential, and their enthusiasm resonated far beyond the scoresheet.
Coach Rishwan Shiyam reflected on the campaign, describing it as “one of the most rewarding and unique experiences.” He emphasized that the event was not only about winning but also about building confidence, encouraging effort, and celebrating inclusion: “The spirit of respect, joy, and support they brought to each game was incredible. Win or lose, they celebrated every point with smiles and high fives.”
Co-coach Aminath Shahurunaaz praised the determination of the athletes: “Each day, the players grew stronger. Their dedication and enthusiasm were inspiring, and guiding them through this experience was a privilege. Their progress shows they have a very promising future in the sport.”
The SOAP Badminton Competition 2025 was a breakthrough moment for the Special Olympics Maldives team. With two silver medals, multiple top-four finishes, and an unforgettable spirit of inclusion, the athletes returned home not only with honors but with invaluable experience and renewed confidence. Their performance demonstrated that badminton in the Maldives has an exciting and inclusive future, shaped by dedication, teamwork, and passion.
