Revival Sports and Maldives national badminton players Fathimath Nabaha Abdul Razzaq (Naba) and Aminath Nabeeha Abdul Razzaq (Naby) have created history by becoming the first Maldivian pair to reach the quarter-finals of a BWF Circuit elite tournament in Europe at the Yonex Italian Open 2026.

The sisters produced another outstanding performance in the women’s doubles Round of 16, defeating the UAE partnership of Tabia Khan and Sreeyuktha Sreejith Parol in straight sets, 22-20, 24-22, to secure their place in the last eight.

The milestone marks the first-ever quarter-final appearance by a Maldivian pair at a BWF Circuit European elite tournament, representing a significant achievement for both Revival Sports and Maldivian badminton.

Naba and Naby will face fourth seeds Yasemen Bektas and Sinem Yildiz of Türkiye in the quarter-finals later today.

Naba and Naby had earlier booked their place in the Round of 16 with a dominant 21-2, 21-2 victory over Egyptian sisters Farida Fikree Eltaweel and Nour Fikree Eltaweel in the Round of 32.

There was mixed fortune for Revival Sports in the men’s doubles competition. Nibal Ahmed and Hussein Zayan Shaheed Zaki (Zayan Zaki) impressed in the Round of 32, defeating Italian pair A. Gurschler and Telfser 21-12, 21-15 to reach the Round of 16. However, their run ended against Germany’s Malik Bourakkadi and Kenneth Neumann, who claimed a 21-8, 21-7 victory to advance to the quarter-finals.

Earlier in the tournament, Nibal and Naby successfully progressed through the mixed doubles qualification rounds, overcoming Italian duo M. Frank and P. Kopania 21-18, 21-12 to earn a place in the main draw.

Naby also enjoyed success in the women’s singles qualifiers, battling past Dutch player M. Dujindam in three sets. After winning the opening game 21-15, she lost the second 15-21 before responding strongly to take the decider 21-12.

Despite qualifying for the main draw, both Maldivian women exited the women’s singles Round of 32. Naby was defeated by Ireland’s S. Flynn 21-12, 21-13, while Naba went down 21-10, 21-12 to Romania’s V. Ginga.

In mixed doubles, Naba and Zayan Zaki were eliminated in the Round of 32 after a 21-9, 21-13 defeat to France’s A. Tores and the Netherlands’ K. De Wit. Nibal and Naby were also set to compete against Dutch pair T. Stoffelen and I. Pthuizen in the main draw.

Revival Sports’ men’s singles campaign ended in the qualification rounds. Hassan Zayan Mohamed lost 21-7, 21-8 to Portugal’s A. Bernardo, Nibal was beaten 21-18, 21-17 by Portugal’s F. Felix, while Zayan Zaki fell 21-7, 21-9 to India’s A. Malik.

Meanwhile, Hassan Zayan and Mohamed Khalaf Imran were unable to progress in the men’s doubles after suffering a 21-2, 21-2 defeat to German pair D. Hess and S. Krax.
