Historic Quarter-Final Run by Naba and Naby Marks New Milestone for Maldivian Badminton

Revival Sports and Maldives national badminton players Fathimath Nabaha Abdul Razzaq (Naba) and Aminath Nabeeha Abdul Razzaq (Naby) made history at the Yonex Italian Open 2026, becoming the first Maldivian pair to reach the quarter-finals of a BWF Circuit elite tournament in Europe.

The sisters’ remarkable run came to an end in the last eight after a 21-9, 21-10 defeat to fourth-seeded Turkish pair Yasemen Bektas and Sinem Yildiz, but their achievement has already secured a landmark place in Maldivian badminton history.

Naba and Naby earned their quarter-final berth with an outstanding performance in the women’s doubles Round of 16, defeating the UAE partnership of Tabia Khan and Sreeyuktha Sreejith Parol in straight games 22-20, 24-22.

They had earlier stormed into the Round of 16 after a dominant 21-2, 21-2 victory over Egyptian sisters Farida Fikree Eltaweel and Nour Fikree Eltaweel in the Round of 32.

Revival Sports also enjoyed success in the men’s doubles through Nibal Ahmed and Hussein Zayan Shaheed Zaki (Zayan Zaki). The pair defeated Italian duo A. Gurschler and Telfser 21-12, 21-15 to reach the Round of 16 before bowing out against Germany’s Malik Bourakkadi and Kenneth Neumann, who secured a 21-8, 21-7 victory.

Earlier in the tournament, Nibal and Naby successfully progressed through the mixed doubles qualification rounds, defeating Italian pair M. Frank and P. Kopania 21-18, 21-12 to qualify for the main draw.

Naby also impressed in the women’s singles qualifiers, overcoming Dutch player M. Dujindam in three sets. After taking the opening game 21-15, she dropped the second 15-21 before bouncing back to win the decider 21-12.

However, both Maldivian women exited in the women’s singles Round of 32. Naby lost 21-12, 21-13 to Ireland’s S. Flynn, while Naba was beaten 21-10, 21-12 by Romania’s V. Ginga.

In mixed doubles, Naba and Zayan Zaki were eliminated in the Round of 32 after losing 21-9, 21-13 to France’s A. Tores and the Netherlands’ K. De Wit. Nibal and Naby also featured in the mixed doubles main draw against Dutch pair T. Stoffelen and I. Pthuizen.

Revival Sports’ men’s singles campaign ended during qualification, with Hassan Zayan Mohamed losing 21-7, 21-8 to Portugal’s A. Bernardo, Nibal falling 21-18, 21-17 to Portugal’s F. Felix, and Zayan Zaki going down 21-7, 21-9 to India’s A. Malik.

Meanwhile, Hassan Zayan and Mohamed Khalaf Imran were defeated 21-2, 21-2 by German pair D. Hess and S. Krax in the men’s doubles Round of 32.

Although Revival Sports’ campaign concluded across the remaining events, Naba and Naby’s historic quarter-final appearance stands as the tournament’s defining achievement for the club. Their breakthrough performance represents the strongest showing by a Maldivian pair at a BWF Circuit European elite tournament and highlights the steady progress Maldivian badminton continues to make on the international stage.
